All,
Just a quick note to thank you all for playing yesterday at the Pride march and also the performance in the evening. Again, everything went really well, and I'm really really proud of what we all have achieved in Brisbane, starting from nothing and now being the loudest gig in town!
Congratulations to Marcel, Dionne, Kanae and Jane for their first march (for Jayne it was her first performance too!). Well done. Thanks to Claire for stepping in on 3rd surdo. It was also great to see Juliana playing again!
Extra thanks for Gail, Patty, and Paul for helping out with the logistics.
Nicki made quite a few pictures during the march, I'll send you the best ones soon. In the meantime, Denis wishes you a "Happy Pride Day"...
So ... what did you think? Log on to blogger and post a comment!
Update: Let's take over has a detailed report about the day, including a fabulous comment about our costumes:
"I was a bit upset about the shiny green, pink and white uniforms they were wearing, though. Don't these people realising that trapping polyesters is a cruel procedure, and that we are endangering the nylon species by over-hunting?"Cheers

Manic Maracatu it is!
It was a great day and I thought we sounded pretty good! My boyfriend was in the city when we started up for the parade and he said it sounded very impressive. Hopefully I can rope him into playing in the band soon!
The comment about the costumes just confirms that we really need to do something about them!
I do prefer Maracatu a bit more groovy and laid back - I think what really lifts it is when Remko does more solos in it, rather than making it faster. As a dancer I can say it is great to be able to relax into a rhythm sometimes and just enjoy the groove. It is definitely fun to play - I'm addicted to the agogo (is that how you spell it?).
Yeah I am (and was) aware that the 'Manic Maracatu' is (currently) too fast for Xequere players. However I had to do something to make it more varied at that stage. We'll work on more variations in the next few weeks so that we don't have to speed it up to make the crowd jump.
As a side note: I'm very pleased how the comments are currently used, this is exactly what I wanted to achieve with the blog! Well done.
I have to say, as a preppie to the Pride parade, I had a ball! My friends said it sounded great, and that performance managed to coax one fellow (Eddie) into joining.
I think that we should be able to round up a few more members this year, as when the information is out there people seem to respond. That is why it would be good to come up with a convenient way to market our name and details in a way that onlookers can remember it after a performance, without having to actually give out business cards. Something to the effect of JOIN US!....LOOK US UP!.....and then the website. It would have to be a banner or something like that I guess. Unless someone wants to try and rope someone into wearing one of those cute little A-frame signs strapped onto their body, with our name and details on it. (Doubtful) Plus we need all the players we have, and so would have to coax other friendly helpers to do this, except that this breed of humankind is becoming extinct!!! Maybe a big flag?
