Announcing ... a great gig!

OK the press release has gone out today. So, Brisbane Roar is playing Celtic in SunCorp stadium on Sunday 12 July as part of Queensland Roars against Racism (QRAR).

We've done QRAR twice before, so why is this so much bigger?
  • It's pretty much certain to be a sell-out, so 52,500 people or so will see us live
  • It's going to be broadcast nationally and internationally
But what's really great, and a great honour for me personally, is that I have been asked by Multicultural Affairs Queensland to be the artistic director for half-time entertainment. I have been asked to completely create, arrange and manage a 6.5 minute 'percussion spectacular' at half-time, with not just the Samba School, but with other Brisbane percussion groups as well, with at least 100 drummers on the field. There's some further details that are still classified but you start getting the idea I hope.

So it's going to be an interesting two months, with a lot of creative thinking, arranging, rehearsing and project managing.

I'm looking forward to it! And I hope so are you! More details over the next few weeks...

Remko, I'm really pleased for you that you've been honoured this way.

As a player, can I just beg you one thing? Pleeeeese don't put any drummers up in the grandstands? I've done big stadium events where that has happened and while the (non-musician) event director thought it would be great, because of the distance, all the beats were "out" and it sounded disastrous.

But yes, it will be an interesting couple of months!

Given the Celts will be in abundance, I'm wondering if we'll be joined by kilted drummers from pipe bands? They have some great drummers!

Yes I'm very much aware that sound travels at 343 m/s. This was an issue especially at the first Suncorp gig, and we learned from it already so it wasn't a problem the second time as I planned for that.

We will be playing on the field.

There will be a pipe band before the game. I am considering for them to play a role at half-time too.

I have a kilt! Not sure if it still fits, but I have one! They have a nice swish to them and they keep your bum warm.

Claire please wear it on Thursday!

Will do!

If it keeps your bum warm, Brian should consider wearing one. No more complaints at 7am "Remko, I'm cold".

But is it a PROPER kilt??? Like mine??? :) :) :) Or is it a kilt skirt for lassies??? :)

It doesn't have a nice swish to it and it keeps my bum warm too.

OK Patty and Brian are also gracefully invited to wear their respective garments this Thursday!

Thanks for reminding me how much I hate bagpipes!

Wait! Wait! Let me see if I've got this right. You're going to be the Musical Director at an event where there'll be thousands of mad Scotsmen and lots of pipers (even "loose cannon amateurs" in the audience), and you hate bagpipes?

BWWUUHAAAAHAAAAHAAA!!!!! :) :)

Note to self: arrange for explicit ban on "loose canon amateur" bagpipe players in Stadium. Use 'can be used as weapon' as compelling argument.
