By way of preparation, here are the main challenges that I can see that we need to overcome, your ideas would be appreciated:
- We need a serious PA. From where, who will transport (it won't fit in my car), who will set it up in time for the rehearsal etc.
- How can we make sure we cater for everyone, so both beginners and long-term members, and also (and this is not the same!) different skill levels.
- How can we make sure that Remko won't get burned out on Thurday nights. When we previously did songs, even though I loved it very much, all the associated hassles on top of having to really work hard by singing, playing cavaco, concentrating on the bateria, dealing with Brian ;-) almost became to much for me.
- How can we make sure the level of playing improves. When we step up there will be the requirement to learn songs etc, so people will need to start learning and practicing at home.

We don't have to play songs straight away. Just show us the basics and we'll split in groups or practice during the week .
As far as singing is concerned, if the lyrics can be translated phonetically, then everyone can join in . If I can sing in Urdu , anyone can ....Still waiting for Bollywood to call me though.
"We don't have to play songs straight away. Just show us the basics and we'll split in groups or practice during the week"
Sorry I don't understand that?
What I mean is, if you can train us to get the basic concepts and techniques right, then we'd feel more confident playing along with the song.
Basic concepts such as starting the surdo part on the 2nd beat etc. , which I often have trouble with. Or playing the pandeiro requires different technique and co-ordination. They all need practice before we can carry the song for the singer(s).
I am coming tomorrow night! I just moved back to Brisbane last week so I'm able to come to Samba School again!! yay!!! See you then
Man, this has blown out of proportion. The idea I got was that playing some casual pagode was a time filler (for the half an hour of room hire that we're still paying for, remember)and a way to brush up on our pagode skills through informal instruction. None of this PA, structured song stuff. Just a jam! That's what I thought. Also, I understand the need to let everyone know that these things are happening - and if it's an incentive for folks to show up on time, then great - but if they don't show up for the first however long then, tough; they miss out. Remko, you keep asking people to arrive on time and they don't. So why should we waste our time and money when we could be expanding our skills through informal practice?
I agree with Claire. It would be great to play like a casual "roda de samba" as if we were in a bar in Brazil. We can play for half an hour before the samba class or even during the break.
Cheers
Fernando
OK, it's good to have some sort of "moderate obssession" . Thanks for pointing this out.
