Gear and goodbye.

Hi sambistas,
I'm currently gearing up to head off to the northern hemisphere (aswell!) as my studies are coming to a close. I will aim to make it this Thursday night to catch you all.

To save on shipping costs I'm selling some of my samba gear (if you're interested, give us a shout):
Pearl repinique (no strap) - $150
RMV tan tan - $150 (very reluctant about selling this beauty!)
Gope caixa (no strap) - $100
Bauer 6" cuica - $40

Thanks for all you've taught me (especially you Remko!) and all the exciting gigs. My favourite would have to be walking George Street with the samba dancers for the Walk against Racism or at the Multicultural fest with Denis' solos. Good times! I look forward to coming along to rehearsal next time I visit Brisbane. Cheers!

No Samba tomorrow 24 November :-(

All - I have been unwell for the past couple of days and pretty sure I won't have recovered enough by tomorrow night, so I unfortunately have to cancel the class this week.

Christmas break & Paul C's farewell

I can't believe it, but the year is almost over and it's time for a little break while we all enjoy Christmas and other barbecues.

The last rehearsal will be on Thursday 8 December. As always, we'll make the last one pretty relaxed, bring some food if you want to, etc. etc. Also, this will be the very last time for Paul C before he heads over to Sweden (why O why I still don't understand).

First rehearsal of 2012 will be Thursday 19 January!

PS: there's a slight chance we'll have a small gig before Christmas - stay tuned!

Saturday, 19 November 2011

I´m baaaack!

Ola a tudo!

I´m back in Oz for a few months on holidays/family time and would loooove to come back and catch up with you guys, and play a little samba! Is there a spare repique lying around for me to play? When are you breaking for the Christmas period?

Hope to see you soon :)

Live on stage

Mineira

Looks like a lot of you liked this song last week. Here it is! I'll continue working on an arrangement!

Lara, abre o pano do passado,
Tira a presa do cerrado, tem rei congo no congah
Anda, canta o samba verdadeiro
Faz o que mandou mineiro, oh mineira…

Samba que samba no bole que bole
Eh morena do balaio mole, se embala no som dos tantans
Quebra no balacoche do cavaco e rebola no balacobaco
Se embola nos balagandans
Mexe no meio que eu sambo do lado
Oi vendo aquele bamboleado
Digo eu tambem sou bam bam bam

Ai cai no samba cai, que o samba vai ate de manha

Oi saravah mineira guerreira
Que eh filha de Ogun com Iansa

Congratulations

Well done everyone, that was quite a performance tonight. I think all our hard work has paid off, this is absolutely what I have been dreaming about for many many years.

You were all gone before I could blink, so I didn't have the opportunity to thank and congratulate you all then and there, so this post will have to do.

I look forward to the photos and will see if we can get a copy of the video too!

Congratulations to Sasha, this was his first gig with us!

Finally, it was great to see an 18-strong bateria tonight. I'd like to do many more songs like this, with interesting arrangements and breaks to keep everyone on their toes each Thursday. I can only do that if you all keep coming to as many rehearsals as possible, so I hope to see you all (almost) every week. That will also motivate me to keep working on new arrangements.

So thank you all once more!

Orquestra Popular da Bomba do Hemetério

02:30 onwards ...... Talking about choreography, I think Remko should "attempt" to perform  this act .

Formed in 2002, the Orquestra Popular da Bomba is lead by Francisco Amancio da Silva , aka "Maestro Forró" , the orchestra consists of 21 members, including technicians and musicians, all residents of the neighborhood of Hemetério ( Recife, Pernacumbo state ).  The orchestra presented a traditional repertoire stretching from some Mambo of Benny More to Mangue Beat of the late  Chico Science, from the Swing to Maracatu, from Xaxado to Ciranda, from Cavalho Marino to Fox Trot passing through the standard renditions of the famous "Vassourinhas", "Cabelo de Fogo" and "Elefante".

Reds Grand Final Saturday 9th July

UPDATE: No drummers required for the Grand Final

Hello All.

After a fantastic win over the Blues on Saturday, it's game on this Saturday 9th July for the Reds at Suncorp stadium. They have a chance to create Reds history and win the Super 15 grand final against Dan Carter and his fellow Crusaders.

They have requested at least 3 drummers to be present for the Grand Final, with a potential for 3 more so 6 drummers in total! This will hopefully be confirmed today, Tuesday 5th July, but if you are interested, please send Remko or myself an email asap.

The idea is similar to last Saturday. We won't have to play before the game but simply march with our suurdos from the Southern End to the Northern end of the stadium where we will be sitting amongst a cheering squad. They have assured us that there will be a proper cheering squad this time around, plus there has been a request for more dancers in lycra...

Expect to arrive at Suncorp stadium around 4pm. Game kick off is 7:30 pm, game finishes at 9:30 pm. General arrangements apply, i.e. no parking etc. etc. Reds tops will be arranged on the day.

So if you're interested to play this Saturday, please let Remko or myself know. We'll discuss all practicalities this Thursday.

Cheers.

Elwin

Pandeiro patterns

If anyone is looking for some nice pandeiro instruction have a look at this site. Good video and written lessons.
http://www.laits.utexas.edu/orkelm/pandeiro/introdemos.html

The lessons are from Mestre Carlao, who is based in London now I think. I remember training with briefly and his music is fabulous.

Also, I really enjoyed having the congas in class last night. So, heres something in the same vein.

Slow day at work yup...

Reds semi final 2 July

Elwin And Paul C will support Charlie and his crew during the Reds semi final on 2 July, with two surdos. It won't be samba but it will be noisy. The Reds just requested one more person on surdo, so if anyone is keen to join them please email me ASAP.

Reds finals

Good morning from Holland! It's 7.30am and 9.8 oC outside. But all is well and we've had pretty good flights with Ruben sleeping for 9 hours between Hong Kong and Amsterdam!

Hope the first Maracatu class went well yesterday, keen to hear how it went. Also Paul D. did you sort out the trailer issue?

I received an email just now from the Reds, they may like to have 2 drummers during the Reds finals series. "The drums will be positioned in with Charlies crew at the Northern end and will work with them to get the chant going through the game." If anyone is interested please email me asap. Somehow I think Paul C and Elwin may be? Date is either 25th June or 2nd July - it depends on how the next few games go.

Afro-Brazilian Rhythms - Session 1

Hi everyone

Tomorrow is our first session for north eastern rhythms. We will meet at the same place and same time and the cost will be $10 to cover the hire of the hall. I would also like to continue eating dinner there before the percussion begins - is anyone else going to be there?

I would love to have the opportunity to share the following rhythms with you over the coming weeks: Aluja, Afoxe, Coco and Maracatu - multiple variations. These rhythms are really really interesting and are probably not played by any other group here in Australia! I am confident that in the time available we will be able to play most of these to performance standard. This means that each rhythm will have an introduction, a couple of grooves, breaks and an ending. It also means that I would like us to strive to play in the traditional style - holding sticks differently and moving in time with the beat. By pulling these things together we will look and sound great.

I would also like to encourage anyone else who has a rhythm that they want to share to stand forward and sieze the opportunity to pass on the knowledge. The beginning of the night is typically spent playing Pagoge but over the coming weeks this time can be spent on experimentation.

Ok I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow,

Cheers for now,

Paul

End of Reds season - thanks everyone!

Last night was the last time this season that we played for the Reds. It has been challenging at times, but by keeping an open mind and by having open and frank conversations with the organisation, we got there in the end and had some good fun too!

I'd really like to thank all players for helping out with this. These gigs have been very important for the samba school, there is no way I can do free classes or even $10 classes without gigs like this.

In particular, I'd like to thank the following dedicated sambistas for their dedication:
  1. Elwin, with 8 games out of 8! He has earned himself a soccer jersey sponsored by Arrivederci!
  2. Gail and Darren, with 7 games each!
  3. Denis and Josh, with 5 games each.
Well done all, and again thank you very much!

As per my previous post, we're now on the lookout for more gigs, in particular non-sport gigs like festivals, performances etc. Please keep an eye out!

Enjoy the Maracatu immersion!

Wednesday, 1 June 2011

What's next!

OK, now that we've (almost) finished the Reds season, just a quick summary of what's up next:
  • This Thursday 2 June, a special rehearsal, with lots of pagode, samba and samba-reggae.
  • From next week 9 June till 14 July, Maracatu special, by the famous Paul Dennis. I have asked him to work on a few songs that we can perform, so I hope all of you will attend all workshops so we get some results!
  • Thursday 21 July, special rehearsal featuring Fernando Camacho. For those of you that don't know Fernando, he is a Carioca (= someone born in Rio) who had a severe disability: he didn't know how to samba. He then made a special trip to Brisbane to learn to play samba in a friendly environment, and after we cured him he went back to Rio. He's now coming back for a short repeat treatment. Please be gentle with him as he's easily frightened.
  • Sunday 24 July, special performance at Angus' Kindy in West End. Ever since leaving Kindy, Angus has been keeping in touch with his old mates there so we celebrate this annually with a special performance. Further details to follow, but it will involve a children's party in the afternoon at Angus' place with lots of cachaca (brazilian cordial).
  • Second half of August: special workshops with Carlos Ferreira. This will involve group instruction as well as some specific instrument classes (in particular caixa). Also he will be able to do dedicated Brazilian drum kit classes. More details soon.
  • Rest of the year: I'd like to do many more non-sporting gigs. Please let me know any opportunities: festivals, special events, etc.
  • Recruitment: there is scope for some more players, and I'd love to have a good tamborim section again. Please keep an eye out for new members.

  • Byron - 2nd Surdo
  • Denis - Caixa
  • Mike - 1st Surdo
  • Sarah - Shaker
  • Paul Dennis - 3rd surdo

live Brazilian samba jazz & Bossanova tonight!

Ola Sambistas,
(understand the the state of origin/handegg is on tonight, but I'm sure most of you enjoy football more, so you won't mind missing it...he he).
Warm up with some live samba jazz & bossanova tonight @ the Glass Bar! 8pm-10pm. free entry.
feat Diego Bezerra (Fortaleza/Brazil) on acoustic guitar, Jason Bell (drums), Bernard Houston (Flute) and maybe a certain Dutch Cavaqo player and percussionist. 'Bom Gosto' roughly translates into 'good taste' for non Brazilian/Portuguese speakers. The all instrumental ensemble, plays music from Brazil's samba, jazz and bossanova greats including Toquinho, João Bosco, Ivan Lins, Caetano Veloso and Jobim. Lead by Diego Feitosa Bezerra's intricate, true school, nylon string acoustic, samba technique re-interpreting the deeper samba, jazz and bossanova music from his homeland.

see you there!

p.s. Champions League Final - Barcelona vs Man United (4am this Sunday morning)...on the big screens @ Park rd! (looking to be one of the most amazing games in football history!!!)

Reds game Sunday 29 May

Next Reds game is on at 4.10pm, Sunday 29 May against Crusaders. We'd need to be there 2.15pm.

The following people have confirmed:
1 Remko - Repinique
2 Elwin - 3rd Surdo
3 Paul C - Caixa
4 Brian - 2nd Surdo
5 Peter - Caixa
6 Darren - 3rd surdo
7 Leesa - Shaker
8 Gail - Shaker
9 Josh - Repinique
10 Siobhann - 1st surdo

Leesa or Gail- if one of you would like to play 3rd surdo instead that's fine too, just let me know before the game so I can get it out of the trailer. I thought we play with less surdos to avoid being too cramped in the stands.

Thanks everyone!

I've been told it's going to be a blockbuster and they expect a big crowd (only 6,000 tickets left 2 days ago!). As a result, we will play at level 7 in our own area, with Charlie's dancers supporting us. No dangerous Maoris there!

PS: one more spot available for the final game on Saturday 4 June! Please let me know if you can play

Thursday, 19 May 2011

Message from Miki

Thanks guys for the card and best wishes - much appreciated - please pass it on to everyone.

Feeling good - Will catch up with everyone in 2 weeks time - looking forward to it!!

Tight groove lesson

One thing to notice: a good drummer sounds like he's ahead of the beat, without speeding though.
Forget the cheesy parts, the groove is awesome

Charlie's crowd has been instructed to follow my direction as well so it's going to be much better than last week I hope.

Thanks again, and see you there!

Reds games going forward

After last Saturday's performance (see blogpost below), I've had some very constructive discussions with the event organisation. They do understand our concerns and have addressed almost all of them. The main outcomes are:
  • Seating: last game we were sitting next to paying patrons, and away from the dancers. The reason was they couldn't reallocate tickets that already had been sold, as they decided to bring us down into the crowd only days before the game. From next game we will be amongst the dancers, so that problem is gone. I have verified the allocated seat numbers to check this is indeed the case.
  • Dancers: have been instructed to really work with us, or else... I will also try to ask them to stand up when they join us. Anyway it will be much easier for me to engage them if they're amongst us.
  • Calls: (I think this is the most important point) Last game we played the 'we-are-red' call to death. We have now agreed that instead of giving me instructions on what to play, I will just get cues to play and stop. What we play will be up to me! That way I can interact with the audience much better, as in my position I have a good feel of what works and what doesn't. So expect more interesting rhythms, and way less 'we-are-red'. I also have been working on a new we-are-red call that I think you and the crowd will enjoy.
  • Unfortunately, we still won't play after a try or successful conversion. Advertising is money in the bank. I see this as a bit silly, but not an obstacle for a great night for us. The crowd might disagree though.
So, reading back my observations on last game, I believe our key concerns have been addressed. I therefore hope and ask you all to give this another shot please this Saturday. We'll still need another 3 or 4 people to confirm. After that, we'll have a break of about 3 weeks.

Sorry guys

Just wanted to say sorry to all of you that played tonight at the Reds. I really always try my very best to make each and every gig fun for you guys to play at. Tonight I didn't succeed, and I feel I have wasted your evening. I really appreciate people playing at these gigs and I feel I've let you down.

There were quite a few reasons why it didn't work out and I'll be writing these down in preparation for a very necessary debrief with the organisation on Monday. I'll keep you posted on the outcome of this.

The evening actually turned worse once you'd all left, security sent police after me for ignoring their unreasonable instructions (wait 15 minutes before driving to pick up the instruments), and on Park Road I almost killed Paul after he had stepped out of the car and he decided to cross the road in between my car and the trailer just when the lights turned green and I drove off.

Sorry - I do hope you all enjoy the rest of the weekend.

This time we'll play in the crowd, in between 'charlie's crew', so a friendly environment. We'll have a section of 3 rows of 5 chairs for 9 of us, allowing for 2 rows for the surdos. I'll be on the field, directing from there. Charlie's crowd has been instructed to follow my direction as well so it's going to be good I hope.

Thanks again, and see you there!

Remaining Reds games for the season (+ Byron's wedding)

Here's a reminder about the remaining Reds games this season. So far, so good, but we're going to improve a few things from the next game, as we want to work much closer together with the 60 kids. Last game we didn't see them at all.

Here are the dates again:

  • Saturday 23 April NSW Waratahs 7:40pm
  • Saturday 7 May evening: Byron's wedding!
  • Friday 13 May Blues 7:40pm
  • Sunday 29 May Crusaders 4:10pm
  • Saturday 4 June Brumbies 7:40pm
It would save me quite some stress if you could all let me know asap if you want to play for each day, so I appreciate your quick responses!

Thanks in advance

HI All,

Byron

Update from Remko: a few people commented tonight that they could make it, but couldn't post on the blog for some reason. Could those people please email me as I have forgotten who you are ...

Here's a picture of Darren, the 1st and 2nd surdo player! Well done Darren!

Debrief for last Saturday's Reds game

I just received a call from the organisers regarding last Saturday's Reds game:
  • Firstly, apologies for sending us all the way to Caxton street for a parade that never happened. The parade indeed had been organised and was supposed to be kicked off by the Normanby hotel. However they failed to get the Reds fans out of there for some reason, so there was no parade. I have been assured we won't be asked to do this again.
  • I asked about Gail's top - no such thing has been found unfortunately
  • Between us, we still must have 3 BMA red tops. If you have one could you please return to me asap.
  • Alcohol - a small bottle of rum was found in the entertainers' room afterwards, disguised in a bottle of mouthwash or something. As the room is shared between many entertainers, it has not been suggested that we brought that in. However I have been ask to pass on the message that bringing alcohol into the stadium is absolutely forbidden and could land you in all kind of trouble.
  • It has been noted that the 'north-south' thing does not quite work that well when we only have 10 people. To be reviewed.
Also, if you're not playing this Saturday, could you please return your (washed) Reds top to me this Thursday as we'll need to give this potentially to other players.

Thanks again to everyone who played this Saturday, I know it was a long day and I appreciate your help very much.

Finally, still don't have enough numbers for coming Saturday (in fact we're going backwards). Please let me know if you can play. If we don't have 10 people the whole season is at risk...

HELP - this Saturday's Reds Game

Urgent call for help

This Saturday, we're supposed to play for the Reds. However, a number of people have pulled out today because of clashing commitments, and as it stands we won't have enough people to play (we need at least ten).

This is the current status:
1 Remko
2 Elwin
3 Darren
4 Denis
5 Claudia
6 Josh
7 Paul C (thanks Paul!)

To be confirmed:
- Peter (unlikely)
- Warren

That means we need at least another 2 people and possibly another 4 people. If we don't manage to get there with at least 10 people, the whole rest of the season is in doubt.

Could I ask everyone to please check again if you can make this Saturday? Please? If you need to discuss this with me, please give me a call.

Thanks
Remko

Thank you & well done!

WELL DONE EVERYONE TONIGHT! Not bad for 1 and a half rehearsal. We did 5 songs, each with at least one break or something, and you guys pretty much nailed it. It was hard work especially with the crappy PA, but we got there. I loved the response from the crowd especially towards the end of the set, they were definitely asking for more.

This is where I want to take the samba school, more songs, interesting arrangements, and lots of fun!

Thanks to Jason for organising a great night and for inviting the samba school. By the way, he put in a HUGE amount of work into this night, well done Jason and good onya for making something like this possible in Brisbane!

Cancelled - Mooloolaba gig 25 March

Thank you to everyone who replied regarding the March gigs.

Unfortunately, only a hand full of people could make themselves available for the Mooloolaba gig, so I had to inform the organisation that we are not  able to perform. When they called me on Friday, I already told them that, given the location and time, it was doubtful that we would be able to perform with the requested 10 drummers. But it was worth trying!

A few people have not yet responded regarding the other performances in March - could you please do so asap?

Upcoming gigs

It's getting busy again with some exciting gigs. Could I ask you to please urgently get back to me if you could make the following gigs please:
  • Next Friday 11 March: Carnaval party at Casablanca, Caxton Street. Around 11pm (confirmed)
  • Friday 18 March: Reds vs Melbourne Rebels at Suncorp, kick off 7.40pm but we'd play before the game as well (confirmed)
  • Friday 25 March: 5.30pm at Mooloolaba Eplanade for the Mooloolaba Fun Run (not confirmed yet - subject to you guys wanting to do this so get back to me asap please). Clearly we'd car pool for this one. I'm also discussing possible involvement on the following Saturday morning (before 11am) if they can provide accommodation, so this would be a fun night out. We'd have to be back in Brisbane by 1pm on Saturday though for the next gig :-)
  • Saturday 26 March: 2.40pm: Reds vs Cheetahs at Suncorp, kick off 2.40pm but we'd play before the game as well (confirmed)
Can I ask everyone to send me an email now while you're at your PC please?

Maria is safe

For all of you that might be worried about Maria - she is safe, on the West coast of the South Island.

Bloody earthquakes!

Monday, 21 February 2011

Many thanks!

Many thanks to all that played at a rather hot afternoon yesterday in SunCorp stadium. Thanks very much for your understanding, we now have seen with our own eyes what a mess the floods caused within the stadium. I hope that we soon have a real dressing room again - with airco!

I assume next time we won't have to be there that far in advance as we won't have to rehearse the 'north-south' thing. Also, I will ask if we can a bit more rhythms instead of just 'we-are-red', although I really start to like the variation that we developed throughout the second half.

So thank you!

Update: I received a phone call late this afternoon from the organisation, with sincere apologies for the problems we experienced with drinking water. We weren't the only ones that didn't get the water, it looks like only the players on the field were looked after. They have promised this won't happen again. They also told me they were very happy with what we did. And they agreed next time more rhythms, and less 'we are red'!

Idea for a red chant twist on maracatu

After the Maracatu break L R L R L R R L R just play the first beat of each phrase and shout WE ARE RED!

So instead of this:
|.......|.......|.......|.......|.......
R...LRLRR...LRLRR...LRLRL.R.L.R.LR.R.L.R

Play this:
|.......|.......|.......|.......|.......
R.......R.......R.......L.R.L.R.LR.R.L.R
WE......ARE.....RED

The nice thing is that the WE ARE RED is stadium slow

Details for Sunday's Reds game (20 Feb)

Last minute updates:

  • Meet no later than 2pm (preferably 1.45pm already) at the NORTHERN car entrance at Castlemaine street. Until now we always met at the SOUTHERN entrance but this has changed due to floods.
  • It's going to be hot. So, sunscreen and a hat would be a good idea. Also forget about jeans, shorts sounds much better in this weather!
  • If you have a Reds top, please wear it.
SunCorp stadium inside is still very much a mess as a result of the floods so everything is a bit slower this time.

Players for Sunday:

Team NORTH
Denis - Caixa
Josh - repinique
Brian - 2nd surdo
Elwin - 3rd surdo
Florian - shaker
Paul Dennis - alfaia

Team SOUTH
Paul Caplat - Caixa
Byron - 2nd surdo
Gail - 3rd surdo
Darren - 1st surdo
Florent - shaker
Miki - Shaker

Remko - repinique
Peter

We will play:
  • before the game on the South plaza. 1 hour with breaks
  • When the team runs onto the field. This will be a special performance, where we'll have two teams, one on the north and one on the south side. We'll rehearse this  on Sunday before the game in the stadium. Listen to it here.
  • During the game, on level 5 in our own section. We will play on the side where the Reds run to, switching at half time. We will call the "WE ARE RED" chant. Listen to it here (not sure who was playing agogo ...).
If you have a Reds shirt, please bring on the day. If you don't have one you'll be given one.

Timing:
  • 1.45pm-2pm - be at SunCorp Stadium (northern car entrance on Castlemaine street). You will all get a headset for the special 'north - south' feature, this will take some time so please be on time.
  • 2.15pm - Rehearsal starts (on level 5). The arrangement I made takes 1 minute but we may have to do this a few times to get it right. I was happy with the rehearsal on Thursday!
  • 3.15pm - start playing outside (timing to be confirmed)
  • Move inside and set up both on North and South side
  • Kick off: 4.40pm
  • Play during game when cued.
  • At half time we switch sides
  • Finish about 6.10pm
I do realise that's a lot of time. I have already negotiated on this to minimise the time, however two factors are at play:

  • Flooding at Suncorp - lots of uncertainty re parking etc, still to be resolved, so let's play it safe
  • We have to rehearse the special 'north-south' arrangement.
For the next game it will all be much less time consuming. I appreciate your cooperation this time (as always).

Finally:
  • sorry - I have no guest tickets. Rugby games are a lot more popular than Roar games and they try to sell every last ticket.
  • sorry - no parking available, due to flood damage. Not even for me it looks like...
  • Make sure you bring sunscreen and a hat for outside

Cheers
Remko

Facebook page for Samba School

For those of you that are on Facebook, there's now a Brisbane Samba School page. If you 'like' this page, you'll get noted of important messages. I intend to put a message there whenever a new important message appears on the blog.

For clarity, the blog will remain the main source of communication. Facebook just will give you the extra alert when something important has been posted.

I appreciate it if you all 'like' that page (you should have received a suggestion - let me know if not). If over 25 people 'like' it Facebook will enable some extra handy features.

And ... tell your friends that might be interested too!

No Roar game tomorrow

Unfortunately we won't be playing during the Roar game tomorrow - due to the floods certain sections of the stadium are still not usable so they had to rearrange things and it became too hard.

HOWEVER - I do have plenty of tickets for the game. Please call me if you like a few!

REDS Fan Day this Saturday 12 February

We have been asked to perform during the REDS Fan Day this Saturday 12 February, as a precursor to our involvement during the 8 home games this season. We might also do a try out of a routine I thought of that we'll be doing at the start of each game.

Where: Ballymore stadium
When: Sat 12 Feb 10:30am - 1:00pm
General parking available

We'd play several sessions between 11:00am and 11:55am, then have a break (sausage sizzle! Jumping castle!) and play again between 12:20pm and 1:00pm

Could you please let me know if you can play that day - much appreciated.

ALSO - Could EVERYONE let me know asap if you still have a Reds shirt / bandana, and bring this (preferably washed) on Thursday?

Heads up: Reds games

We have been asked again to drum up support during the 8 Reds games this season. It's going to be bigger and better than last year, with our own sections in the stadium well away from the audience, so no more issues there. We also will do a 'grand opening' each game, on level 5. More about all that later.

I'd like to start checking who is available for these dates please, they want about 15 drummers each time. The dates are:

  1. Sunday 20 February Western Force 4:40pm
  2. Friday 18 March Melbourne Rebels 7:40pm
  3. Saturday 26 March Cheetahs (SA) 2:40pm
  4. Saturday 16 April Bulls 7:40pm
  5. Saturday 23 April NSW Waratahs 7:40pm
  6. Friday 13 May Blues 7:40pm
  7. Sunday 29 May Crusaders 4:10pm
  8. Saturday 4 June Brumbies 7:40pm
I would really appreciate it if you all could drop me an email with your intentions and constraints, in other words if you'd like to play and also if you've got any holidays etc. booked.

There will also be a rehearsal at Ballymore stadium on Saturday afternoon 12 February - more about that later too.

We will incorporate some Maracatu into all this too!

Cheers

Roar games and class fees

Because of the flooding in Suncorp stadium, Roar games will temporarily move to Skilled stadium in Robina, Gold Coast, and they won't require us there. This means I won't be able to fund the Thursday night classes through the Roar games for the time being, so from next week Thursday 27 January I will have to reinstate the $10 class fee (or $40 for 5 vouchers).

Sorry about that. The Polish Club has also increased their fees, and as you may know I am now without a day job for the time being as well, so unfortunately I see no other option.

Once the Roar games resume, including the finals series which hopefully get hosted partly in Suncorp stadium, we go back to free classes. And following that, we should have 8 Reds games as well. More about that later.

If anyone is unable to pay the $10 please talk to me and we'll sort something out.

Thank you
Remko

Samba resumes this Thursday 20 January!

Good news, the Polish Club didn't get flooded and they restored power today as well, so we can have a much needed rehearsal again this Thursday.

Now, it's going to be a bit weird in the current situation. I just spoke with Gail, and she thinks we should indeed resume samba asap. Firstly at night there's nothing to do at her house anyway, secondly people need to pick up their usual routines again as life goes on.

Gail suggested to make it a little bit special as well, to celebrate the enormous help she has received from pretty much the whole samba school. She thought maybe everyone can 'bring a plate', and we'll catch up with each other as well as getting back into samba and pagode.

I think that's a great idea. What do you think? I hope to see you there!

'Back On Her Feet' care package for Gail

Morning All,

Can anyone who is interested in contributing to a care package to help Gail get 'Back On Her Feet' after the flood please contact me here:  claire.petersen@brisamba.com . The list of specific items is still being compiled and I will contact everyone interested in the near future with further details.  This will need to be a highly coordinated effort, so please let me know if you have anything in particular you really want to contribute.

Thanks in advance,
Claire

Thank you thank you thank you

Can I just thank everyone very much who contributed to the cleanup of Gail's house (aerial picture taken during the flood)  today, of course also on behalf of Gail herself. I could not believe how many people were working at the same time, even people that don't even know Gail but as volunteers were just being assigned to a random house.

It all made a big difference. This is a picture close to the end of the day, when most people were gone already.

(yes that is Gail drinking a beer!!!)

Besides the people that turned up, Miki, Maria, Mike & Sarah also left messages on my phone during the day. Sorry I didn't get back to you - I simply was too obsessed with clearing mud to think about my phone. Rest assured there will be other opportunities to help - today was just a start.

I will post details on how everyone can help in the days/weeks to come, in consultation with Gail.

Thanks all again!
